Relic (Aging the guitar to get that classic vintage roadworn look)
Every aspect of this ageing process requires specialist materials and a keen eye in order to replicate a natural ageing process of a guitar. The level to relic the guitar is the customers' choice.
Please take a look through the gallery pictures on the right of a USA Fender American Standard Stratocaster professionally reliced.
To create a better understanding of the aging process below are some of the individual actions taken to produce a relic guitar.
Create authentic wear points where appropriate. Headstock decal replaced with authentic waterslide to create the aged waterslide transfer look. Buff fretboard marker dots to create scratchs (finger wear). Small dints to the neck are optional but always add a better look and vintage feel.
Create authentic wear points where appropriate, drop markings, knocks and scratches. Differnt types of dints are optional, depending on what type of wear look you want. Spray with a nicotine satin lacquer or nitrocellulose lacquer, vintage wax, bees wax etc.
Various abrasive and polishing pastes are used. Custom staining to give that cream vintage look, or replace with ready aged scratchplates (many styles now avaialable online) Plectrum marks/scrapes and vintage hand polished bevel edges on three ply style pick guards.
All the guitars hardware, bridge, machine heads, nuts, bolts, etc are sanded, buffed or treated with an ageing fluid to recreate the natural nickel fade without affecting the function of screw threads.
The above process in no way affects the performance of guitars, its purely cosmetic.
The above describes the basic pre-ageing process steps taken to create a relic.
